Art and design
At Hertford Primary, all pupils are provided with a sketch book from EYFS. Their sketchbook allows them to experiment with ideas, develop skills and techniques and think critically. They will promote and instill the idea that art and design is an inherently exploratory and creative process. Their sketchbooks reflect the progression of skills outlined in the National Curriculum.
At Hertford Primary, we aim to provide pupils with a rich and diverse experience or art, craft and design. We provide and use a wide range of artistic materials they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. In addition to this, we use outdoor learning, forest school and links with local artists and projects to ensure children are able to explore and experience their own environment through the artistic process beyond the walls of the school itself. Art is linked to a range of topics and there are opportunities for artistic creativity embedded across other areas of the curriculum.
To demonstrate artistic self-expression, we introduce children to known (and unattributed) great artists, architects and designers. Through these examples, the children will become inspired and learn to use the language of art to describe and critique techniques, materials, processes and outcomes. Children will choose to reflect or adapt these in their own work.
At Hertford, children will understand how their artwork is a form of self-expression and that there can be no right or wrong answers about an individual’s creativity or response to a stimulus.
As the Hertford child progresses to key stage 2, they are provided with a new sketch book which stays with them in Year 3 and Year 4 and a third sketch book through to year 6. Regularly reviewing their sketchbook will allow children to celebrate and reflect on the development of their skills in pencil work, line and form.
