“Let nature be your teacher,” William Wordsworth
Forest School at Hertford
All the children at Hertford Infants and Nursery School take part in Forest School sessions. Forest School is a child-led, play-based ethos that offers children regular opportunities to succeed, improve self-esteem and develop as a person through hands-on learning in a natural setting. Sessions help to stimulate creativity, build confidence and teach children new skills such as shelter-building, green wood-working, natural art and fire-lighting.
Perseverance
Most activities during Forest School sessions require perseverance and resilience, such as fire lighting, sawing and whittling. The children are given encouragement, as well as time to become absorbed in an activity, which usually results in them becoming determined to succeed.
Team Building and Friendships
Working together is paramount during Forest School sessions. Many of the activities need the help and support of others in order for them to be successful. Playing and working together enables lovely friendships to develop.
Play
Play is at the very heart of the Forest School ethos and a source for so much learning. Forest School also incorporates child led learning which means the children are enthused to take part in activities which have been narrated by themselves.
Exploring the Environment
During Forest School sessions the children have plenty of time to explore the environment and in doing so develop a deep connection with nature.
"No one will protect what they don't care about and no one will care about what they have never experienced." David Attenborough.
Cooking
Cooking is an important part of our Forest School sessions. We often use food from our kitchen garden, in doing so learning about where our food comes from. They learn life long cooking skills before sharing food with their friends at the end of our session.
Learning about the Seasons
We go out in all weathers and explore what the different seasons bring. The children learn to appreciate the changes of the seasons.
Creativity
Children are naturally creative and so many of our Forest School activities, as well as just being in nature enable the children to stretch their imagination.
