Science
We believe that a high-quality science education for our Hertford children provides them with the foundations for understanding the world around them. We also know that Science has changed our lives, continues to do so and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. We teach a varied, rigorous and exploratory science education, as well as essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science to help them to become curious, inquisitive scientists. Our curriculum develops scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding for all pupils, as well as fostering an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries. This helps the children to be able to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them. Our curriculum also enables children to become enquiry-based learners collaborating through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences and opportunities to develop their ‘Working With Others’ skills is given high prominence. We believe it is important to cultivate a respect for living organisms and for the physical environment. We believe that all children should have equal access and opportunity to experience the awe and wonder that science can reveal and our aim is that children will develop a life-long interest in science and their world.
Our children are given opportunities to deepen their scientific thinking during forest school sessions, our forest school lead works alongside teachers to plan sessions and activities that reflect current learning inside the classroom and covers statutory guidance within the National Curriculum. Our safe and stimulating outdoor environment not only allows children to develop an understanding of natural change, but inspires children to collaborate, challenge and deepen scientific knowledge. The Hertford child is given opportunities to develop their understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of enquiries to answer questions and draw conclusions from their work. We believe science is highly interconnected and encourage cross-curricular links within our provision, furthermore, we ensure our school values are at the heart of all our learning. Throughout the year we assess children’s scientific knowledge and ability to work scientifically, using guidance to inform next steps, allowing each child to reach their full potential.
