PSHE

Our PSHE curriculum has been designed to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding to lead confident, healthy and independent lives by accepting and embracing any challenges they face. Our curriculum develops the Hertford child’s ability to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. We foster opportunities for our children to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.  At Hertford Schools, we strongly focus on working with others during PSHE to teach explicit skills that build self esteem, resilience and empathy with the intention of raising aspirations and improving the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

PSHE is taught as a discrete subject which is regularly timetabled in every year group.  PSHE is organised into 6 strands: Belonging to a community (citizenship); Safe relationships ; changing and growing up relationships education; active citizens (citizenship); diversity and equality and keeping safe, health and well-being. The strands recap on previous learning and are progressive. There is a focus on discussion and exploring themes as a class including role play, scenarios and sorting activities.  When opportunities arise in other curriculum areas PSHE themes are interlinked and referenced. The application of knowledge and skills is practised in a safe setting allowing all children to find their voice and raise questions to cement their understanding. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
