Maths
Mathematics is taught through a variety of fun, purposeful interactive and child centered activities, both as stand alone lessons and as an integral part of play.
We are on a journey to Maths Mastery with the Sussex Maths Hub. Maths Mastery is defined by the NCETM as 'pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject’.
The phrase 'teaching for mastery' describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.
At Hertford Primary School we endeavor to:
-develop confident mathematicians who can talk about their learning using key vocabulary and stem sentences
-develop independent mathematicians who can select resources to support their mathematical thinking
-provide children with a solid understanding of key mathematical concepts
-provide challenge to take children’s understanding deeper
Children in Year 1 to Year 6 have clearly set out learning objectives for maths as outlined in the National Curriculum.
The curriculum covers
- Number and place value : e.g. ordering and comparing numbers; rounding
- Calculation: addition and subtraction; multiplication and division-with increasingly larger numbers
- Fractions , decimals and percentages
- Measurement: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g); volume/capacity (l/ml); time
- Geometry: 2D and 3D shapes; angles; symmetry
- Statistics: bar charts; line graphs; pictograms and tables
Children are assessed regularly so that we are aware of their attainment and progress. Interventions are delivered, within maths lessons themselves and at other times, including pre-teaching for some groups, to help the children make good progress. Support is also given by our skilled teaching assistants and, some children access small group or 1:1 work with trained staff.
Maths at home
Please find below a variety of maths games and website which will support your child as a mathematician. There is also a link at the bottom of the page to the KS1 parent booklet, which contains links and ideas to support maths at home. Clicking on the images will take you to the webpages.
